Subject: Adding a Digital Formation product to the list of allowed applications when Data Execution Prevention is enabled

Product: All Digital Formation Products

Last Updated: March 17, 2008

Overview

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature Microsoft added to recent operating systems to help secure systems from attack.  However, if this option is turned on, Digital Formation products will not run unless you add them to the list of excepted applications.

Details

The symptom of this issue is when you try to run a Digital Formation application, you will see the splash screen, but the application will fail to launch.  Additionally, processor usage will become very high.  If this happens, use the Task Manager to kill the process (CORE32LA.BIN, CORE32RI.BIN or CORE32RV.BIN), and follow the steps below, which will permit the product to run when DEP is enabled.  The steps shown are for Windows XP, but it should be similar on other operating Systems.  Contact your IT department if you are unsure on making these changes.

  1. Right-click on My Computer either on the desktop or the Start Menu; select the Properties item.
  2. Select the Advanced tab.
  3. Click on the Settings button under the Performance group.
  4. Select the Data Execution Protection tab.
  5. If the option to Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only is selected, you do not need to continue; this technical document does not apply to you.
  6. Select the Add button.
  7. Browse to the application Bin folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\LESA\Bin).
  8. Select the application executable file (LESA32.EXE, RIS_32RI.EXE or RIS_RV32.EXE).
  9. Select OK to exit this window, as well as to System Properties window.

This change should now allow the application to run (a reboot should not be necessary).
