Digital Formation, Inc.     Technical Document #1011

Subject: Accessing Help on a Remote Drive (Network Installations)

Product: All Digital Formation Products

Last Updated: August 1, 2005

Overview

This document describes a problem encountered when accessing the on-line help from a remote computer, as is done with a network installation.  In this situation, opening the help may display a proper table of contents, however the actual content is unavailable, and you may receive a standard browser error for a missing document.

Details

This problem is caused by a Microsoft security bulletin (MS05-026); access to HTML help features are disabled when accessed from a remote  location.  To resolve the problem, a change in the registry is required on each client system that will be accessing the software from a remote location (server share or drive).  The following changes may be made manually, or a REG file may be obtained from Digital Formation.  WARNING: Modifying the registry improperly can render your system completely unusable, proceed with caution!

On each Client system:

  1. Open REGEDIT from the Start | Run option.
  2. Browse to the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x]
  3. Create or modify the following entries:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\HHRestrictions]
"MaxAllowedZone"=dword:00000001
"EnableFrameNavigationInSafeMode"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions]
"MaxAllowedZone"=dword:00000001

Note: These changes may compromise system security - additional information can be found in Microsoft technical document #896358.
