Subject: Installation Errors

Product: All Digital Formation Products

Last Updated: April 6, 2001

Overview

This document lists and describes some of the possible error messages that can be displayed during software installation, along with the possible ways to resolve them.

Details

Message:

Please insert Disk #??

Explanation:

The installation software mistakenly believes that it cannot find installation files, even though they exist.  This is a known issue with the InstallShield setup program.  This is usually only seen when the location of the installation files is located in a path name that includes spaces (long file names).  During normal unpacking of files provided on the internet, you are given the opportunity to specify a location to the put the installation files.  If you change this location, and choose a path that includes spaces, you may get this error.

Resolution:

Move the folder with the installation files to a location that does not have spaces, and try the installation again.

Message:

Cannot overwrite file...

Explanation:

The installation software is unable to write a file.   This is usually caused by having insufficient permissions to write to the location for the file.

Resolution:

You should be logged in as an Administrator for the machine onto which you are installing the software.  Be sure you have write permission on the System folder.  If this is not possible, contact Digital Formation, Inc. for possible solutions.

Message:

Various odd messages when trying to load the installation process.

Explanation:

Sometimes a previous installation will not properly remove the temporary files used by the installation.  These files can interfere with other installation programs.  The behavior of these types of errors is usually very odd.

Resolution:

Look in the folder which contains temporary files.  This can be a path such as C:\Temp, C:\WinNT\Temp, or C:\WinNT\Profiles\UserName\Local Settings\Temp.  If you see folders with names such as _ISTMP0.DIR, you may have previous installation files lying around.  Be sure you are not currently running any programs, and delete these folders.  A clean reboot may be necessary to do so if the failed installation was performed recently.  Once removed, try the installation again.
